After getting a couple of Lolas, I knew I needed
to get some appropriate competition. Classic Ferraris and Porsches
are the answer. This bright yellow car is almost too bright, but
it allows me to show more of the detail of the car. You can see
from here that the vents on either side and behind the driver have realistic
mesh screens in them. Brilliant. This particular model was
recommended by new friends in the hobby.

Fly doesn't produce lighted cars, but the tail
lights look almost illuminated. The engine detailing is very nice,
and the tires are appropriately stout. You can get a peek of the
dash instrumentation (more on that later).

I think these gold painted hubs are awesome. I
may sound stupid, but I think the gold paint helps on the front stub axles.
This car does seem to handle better than any other car I have.

This is a simple and sleek shape. It's no
mistake that this car performs well.

Check this out. Fly designs their head lamps
such that when they catch light a cetain way, it looks like they are lit.
It's almost disturbing on the track to see this car "flash"
its lights. The glass is crystal clear giving a view of the driver's
face and out the back. The screened vents can be seen in good
detail here as well.

Here's a view down into the cockpit, where you
can see the driver's black gloved hands on the wheel, and crisp dash gauges.

My Review: Let me start by saying I don't have any timing software running on my track, which is a small 16' figure 8 (Scalextric Circuit 2). I also remove any traction magnets from my cars to give them the tail hangin' sliding handling I love. The Ferrari 512 is one of my favorite classic GT cars. The detail on this car is up the usual high Fly standards. The performance is outstanding. The motor is very hot (like my #34 Lola). In my "Beat the Pacer Car" testing (described in my review of the #34 Lola), this car performs the best. Straighaway speed is good and acceleration is better. The deceleration is also good, so it's not so bad going into the curves. I noticed when taking the pictures that the guide doesn't swivel as far as some of the other cars I have. This may be a big part of why this car performs so well. It 's not as vulnerable to excessive oversteer as other cars (including other Fly Classics). It's easy to drive, even at speed. Catching up and passing another car is not a chore for this 512S. This car did not have the rear axle slop that plagues many other Fly cars. The front stub wheels/axles work better than others. I thought they were brass at first, then realized it's just the paint. But I think the paint helps. The wheels spin more freely than the plain black plastic. This may be another factor in the car's performance. The final verdict... If someone challenges me to a race, this will be the first car I grab. |
